Cloud Computing: The Pros and Cons

Cloud. One could say that the cloud is a genuine “child” of the digital age. One of the most “overused” technological terms of the era and at the same time, a technology capable of changing the way we use Technology on a daily basis.

The cloud is an entire technology, a trend based on which data storage is not done locally but online. Instead of having our data on a hard drive or a USB, we store it on a server somewhere online. This possibility is offered to us by special services that have the infrastructure and the know-how. By storing our data somewhere centrally, we automatically gain the advantage of being able to access it from anywhere, regardless of what device we use.

But what are the advantages and disadvantages of the cloud?

The main advantage of the cloud is that it allows us to get rid of physical media. In this way, we are given the opportunity to work from anywhere we are without having to carry a storage medium (usb). All we need is an Internet connection and the data is always close to us. Another positive is that there is no fear of data loss or destruction, unlike physical disks, where data is stored in one place, in the cloud it is stored simultaneously on many servers. The environment also gets a share, since the cloud has an ecological character (green cloud), using only the energy you need each time.

Regarding the security of data in the cloud, opinions are divided. Some companies claim that it is the safest storage medium while others still have their reservations.

In fact, Cloud storage, beyond the archiving and easy search capabilities it provides, allows us to feel safe thanks to automated and repeatable backup processes, but is that enough? Cloud computing poses significant security risks due to its very nature. A company’s data and applications are hosted by cloud service providers, which exposes them to many types of risks, such as the exposure or loss of sensitive data.

Another question arises about the cost of cloud storage. Cloud services can bring significant cost savings because they do not require as much equipment, but uploading and downloading data can cost much more than we think! It is also worth noting that in the event of non-payment of the service, access to our data is limited or completely blocked.

Many studies have shown that in recent years, business has been “flying to the clouds”. Experts in the field argue that the cloud will be the future of business technology, in fact, its bright future, offering impressive financial results. However, when someone chooses to implement a cloud architecture, they should keep in mind that due to the varying requirements, some additional costs arise.

Taking into account modern business needs, the ever-increasing growth and taking into account the additional costs, would you choose cloud-based services for your business or not?
