Cosmos Business Systems undertook the implementation of the modernization of the network infrastructure of all bodies of the academic and research community
In a rapidly evolving and technologically changing globalised environment, the digital transformation of higher education is a scientific and social necessity.
Based on this treaty, the National Network for Research and Technology Infrastructures (GRNET), an agency of the Ministry of Digital Governance, aiming at the targeted upgrade of network infrastructures, in accordance with the project of the “Hephaestus” Act, aimed at modernizing the network infrastructure of all bodies of the academic and research community of the country and their better access to GRNET’s network.
The new facility in 45 universities and research institutions helped both students to have a faster and reliable access to the internet through the existing structures of the institutions and professors to utilize new spaces in the institutions and activate modern teaching tools. It also helped the better utilization of the supercomputing units available in research centers and the better interconnection of universities in more than 59 locations nationwide.
Through the use of new equipment numbering 2,053 Switches and Routers as well as 56 Servers for the Network Management System, it is possible for faster and uninterrupted transmission of large amounts of data between university nodes.
The equipment offered is 5G & 6G Ready which means that various educational applications that could not be used until recently, can now be put into operation and activated.
The completion of the “Hephaestus” Act will provide hundreds of thousands of users of the country’s academic and research community with unhindered access to GRNET’s network to specialized information technology services at gigabit speeds.
It will also facilitate the daily work of students, researchers, academic and administrative staff of institutions and research institutions, enhancing the capacity of the academic and research community for advanced scientific research and collaborations with international teams.
The project is implemented by the company Cosmos Business Systems, one of the largest Systems Integrators in the field of Information Technology and Telecommunications in Greece and Cyprus. It includes, in addition to Huawei’s active equipment, large-scale fiber optic cabling projects, with more than 160 kilometers of new cabling installed. The accompanying services provided include installation, configuration, warranty of good operation and technical support (for more than 5 years), as well as user training.

The next step is the implementation of IFESTOS 2, which includes 6G ready Wi-Fi 6 wireless infrastructure (more than 9,000 wireless access devices), which is expected to be completed in 2023.
